I just finished the final episode of You, and the closing line calls into question viewers who found Joe attractive, despite his heinous actions, over the course of 5 seasons.
Some thoughts on that:
Many women find protectiveness an attractive trait. Why? The answer is remarkably straightforward. If men are capable of hurting us, if they do hurt us, then it will always be comforting to find the one best equipped at keeping us safe. But how can they do that without being just as dangerous as the predators themselves?
It becomes a precarious situation we’re left balancing — find a man unafraid to wield violence. But hope he doesn’t turn it on us.
