Type 2 Fun — What it is And How It’ll Help Your Hustle Mindset
An overweight squirrel, a motivational aerobics coach, and the moment I realized I’m not a difficult-to-please b*tch.
There’s a birdhouse perched above my driveway inhabited by an overweight squirrel.
His name is Meatball.
Watching Meatball, leaving peanuts for Meatball, calling my husband in a panic because ants are swarming Meatball’s home (re: peanuts) — this is my ideal level of fun. It requires minimal effort and causes my husband to reconsider his marriage vows.
This — ladies and gents — is Type 1 fun.
Type 1 fun is fun in the moment.
Type 2 fun, on the other hand, is fun in retrospect. Type 2 fun sounds good on paper, but somehow we find ourselves disappointed while it’s happening. The concept was first introduced to me during a workout. I was sweating my arse off while this toned twenty-something instructor explains how she went snow skiing and it was Just. So. Hard. But afterward, she realized it was Type 2 fun: Hard in the moment, but rewarding afterward.
Ohhh, I thought to myself, that’s why life sucks balls all the time. It’s just Type 2 fun.
Because the truth is, I rarely have as much fun during vacations as I feel I’m supposed to. And exercising…
