Well written! I agree with everything except for the rare flattery bit. I'm a big believer in building people at any opportunity. Maybe it doesn't lead to more respect, but it does seem to make people want to spend time around me. But mostly I do it because I worry if I don't compliment someone, maybe no one else will.
